May 27th. Children’s Day.
And if you listen closely, you’ll hear Lagos humming with life, bouncy castles inflating, jollof rice bubbling, and small but mighty voices shouting,
“Mummy, I want that one too!”
From the streets of Mushin to the estates in Lekki, from Agege to Festac, there’s magic in the air today.
Not the kind from cartoons, but the real kind, the pure, joyous energy of children.
Once Upon a Time… Yes, You Too Were a Child
Before you were haggling with Keke drivers and praying NEPA doesn’t take light during your Zoom meeting, you were once the small pikin dancing Shina Peters-style at school parties with Capri-Sonne in one hand and Puff-Puff in the other.
Remember when happiness was:
- That new white socks for Children’s Day parade?
- The plastic whistle that somehow never stopped working?
- Or when they shared party packs with one biscuit and a pencil (and you still felt rich)?
Children’s Day isn’t just nostalgia,it’s a reminder.
Ebuka and Tara Know What’s Up
Ebuka’s mum bought him a Spider-Man costume weeks ago. This morning, he wore it with crocs and sunglasses and declared himself “the superhero of Lagos.”
Tara’s rocking a sparkly pink Moana dress with matching beads. When her uncle asked what she wants for Children’s Day, she said,
“I want rice. With meat. No egg.”
Lagos children don’t play.
Here is why Children’s Day Still Matters (Yes, Even in This Economy)
Beyond the cute outfits and endless rice, Children’s Day is:
- A reminder to listen to our children, not just school them.
- A day to nurture their dreams, not just discipline their mistakes.
- A chance to create the kind of joyful memories they’ll hold on to as adults, when life starts moving too fast.
Because whether it’s crayons or coding, barbie dolls or big dreams, these children deserve love, laughter, and soft life.
5 Ways to Make It Unforgettable (Even at Home)
- Dance Together: Put on some Asake or Baby Shark and move those hips.
- Play Together: Cards, Ludo, charades… win or lose, just play.
- Talk to Them: Ask them what they dream about. Let them teach you Gen Alpha slang.
- Celebrate Something Small: Their handwriting, their drawing, their big imagination.
- Feed Them Joy: Not just with food, but with presence, hugs, and laughter.
To the Adults Raising Children in This Lagos… We See You.
You are trying, You are sowing seeds, You are raising future presidents, inventors, doctors and maybe a child who will finally fix Lagos traffic.
So don’t just celebrate them. Celebrate you too.
And if you don’t have a child of your own?
Check on the children around you. Be the positive adult they’ll never forget.
